As the master of an unlimited tonnage U.S. flag merchant vessel this person is ultimately responsible for overall safe operation of the Training Ship State of Michigan . Duties include ensuring the vessel, and the secure facility it is berthed at, are operated in accordance with US regulations and application classification society standards. This position will work closely with the Chief Engineer (C/E) on coordination of USCG/ ABS inspection and with Great Lakes Maritime Academy Superintendent on the schedule for the annual training cruise. This individual will also be responsible for operation of the vessel as per MARAD directives. This person will augment the Great Lakes Maritime Academy Deck Department by teaching up to six credit hours each fall and each spring semester. Class will be assigned by Great Lakes Maritime Academy Deck Department Head, but may include Lakes and/or River Piloting. This individual must be able to meet and maintain USCG physical standards required for a Merchant Marine Officer.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATES and LICENSES
Associates degree required; must agree to complete a bachelor’s degree within four years of hire.
Experience sailing on the Great Lakes or Commanding Officer of equivalent USN/USCG vessel
Ability to meet and maintain USCG physical standards required for a Merchant Marine Officer
U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s Credential (Officer’s License)
Must be willing and able to obtain Master Great Lakes (any gross tons) within one year of hire
First Class Pilot (all 5 lakes and 3 rivers tested by USCG)
Must hold or be willing and able to obtain Valid STCW certification
Active Duty or retired USN/USCG candidates may apply without a license if they have applicable command experience and prove they can sit for their license within 6 months of hire.
Experience as a classroom instructor
Experience sailing as an officer on a MARAD owned training vessel
STCW “train the trainer” course
ISM lead auditor
Directly supervises two to ten Deck Cadets during the year; will supervise three officers and one cook when vessel is underway. Carries rrout supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
WORK HOURS :
This is a full-time, 12-month position.
