When the high it is stronger or displaced west, as now, storm formation is less likely due to stronger wind shear and cooler SST temperatures caused by stronger trade winds, however, when tropical cyclones do form, a strong Bermuda-Azores high will cause them to track farther to the west increasing landfall risks. During 2004 when the Bermuda High was farther west and south than usual, a record four hurricanes – Charles, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne – slammed into Florida.
