Hi guys, I am asking this for 2 of my younger buddies that are from here, and are itching for a career at sea. I’m in a different union (obviously), but I am trying my best to guide my buddies.
My questions:
What kind of jobs get called from the Guam hall?
How often?
Are the jobs mainly for around this area, i.e. the west Pacific?
They want to go the wiper route, but SIU is the only hall here, so they will go deck, if need be.
You can look near the back of SIU’s monthly newspaper to see the number of jobs going out of every hall. You won’t know if it was competitive or taken off the all-ports board or if someone was recalling a job.
Guam would have a higher rate of recall jobs (government contract) from the people who live in the SE Asia area. I’d guess there would be fewer jobs up for grabs there.
They should go to the hall and ask the person behind the desk. And bring cookies or snacks ‘for the hall’ because bribing the people behind the desk is bad.
