Itâs interesting that they had a heated exchange on the VHF. It suggests they didnât communicate until somebody got pissed off.
As itâs been said, all this could have been avoided if theyâd communicated on the radio. Itâs my experience while transiting on the ICW with crew boats or survey launches that sail boaters donât use what they refer to as the ship to shore radio. Maybe they think itâs only for ship to shore calls?!?
In the ditch, theyâre usually motoring at 4 or 5 knots and I would call them as a courtesy to tell them that that if they wanted to slow down temporarily I wouldnât wake them as much but they rarely answered. Then they got perturbed because Iâd be throwing a bigger wake since I had to pass them at a higher speed. Might have been the case here where the dinner boat might have called and got no answer and just decided to overtake.
