Kongsberg Maritime (formerly Roll Royce Marine) have signed a contract with Havila Kystruten to remotly monitor and service their 4 vessels now under construction:

Is this the future for ships and shipping??

Will they keep an eye on the lube oil level in your engines?

You all are late to the party, GE and others have been doing this for ages with airplane engines. If there is an oil level sender someplace you very much can monitor it remotely.
I know a truckdriver who got an irate call to add oil, his company dispatcher was watching the oil pressure fall at his monitoring station via satellite telemetry.

I would think that would be one of the simplest and most logical things to watch.
If it is displayed in the ECR now, why not at a remote display?
Or is the dipstick still the only way to know??

Grew up in North Jersey about 7 mile from N.Y.C. What’s it to you! LOL

I grew up with “Wiseguys” and better yet “Wannabe Wiseguys”.

the march of progress… unless some law is passed they may well have remote controlled ships, why not? save on wages, insurance, food, xportation, etc. etc. etc. , yea, there will be ‘‘collateral’’ damage but progress marches on.
disclaimer: NO, I AM NOT ADVOCATING FOR MY JOB TO BE REPLACED !!

Testing of remote operation of machinery on board ships at sea is ongoing:

No don’t worry, this is presently limited to ferries on Norwegian fjords and does not mean that the engineers are obsolete YET.

With the transition to battery powered plug-in ferries going on at a rapid phase in Norway and Scandinavia:

> **[Electric ferries – a success for the climate and for Norwegian battery...](https://www.tekna.no/en/news/newsletter-february-2019/electric-ferries/)**
>
> “By as early as 2022, so many electric ferries will be in operation that annual emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere will be 300 000 units less than at present, which corresponds to the discharges of 150 000 cars.

The good ol’ ships engineer with diesel in his veins may not be needed though:

He may not be first choice to man the remote control room either, unless he is willing and able to re-school and learn new technology.
