Are there any benefits from working for a small company compared to a large company? It seems larger companies generally pay better, provide better benefits, better training, and more opportunities for advancement. Is there any reason to take a position at a small company (fewer than 10 boats or 80 seaman, whichever is higher)?
Most small companies are usually bought up by the larger ones. At least that seems to be the norm in the gulf. Sometimes you end up in a better place and sometimes you end up where they only want your boat for their senior guys. Happened that way for me once. I was a very young captain who proved myself and earned my position within the company. Company sold out and the buyers had promised the newer nicer boats to their guys. They offered me a spot for less pay on one of their older boats. Told them to shove it.

Sometimes with small company’s you have more of the family type atmosphere. The owner can easily be more attainable than with a larger. Now sometimes there are exceptions to the rules. As you pointed out, the issue with smaller companies that that sometimes, there is not alot of room for advancement if they have low turnover.
