I need a coast guard approved class for cpr/first aid NOT stcw but due to scheduling issues it’s been a struggle trying to find time for the class. I ran across this website here:

> **[USCG-Approved | Emergency University](https://www.emergencyuniversity.com/storefrt/p-88-uscg-approved.aspx)**
>
> According to the latest guidelines published by the American Heart Association and United States Coast Guard (USCG) Adult CPR & First Aid training program includes one-year access to Emergency University's nationally accredited online Adult CPR...

Has anyone used this? The certificate they gives looks alright but I’m sketchy about 100% online classes

Its $37 vs $120. You can find promo codes to make it even cheaper if you look

It would work for “frantzc” but might not work for others. ARC courses are good for the requirement for your first national endorsement (license) but not for STCW.

What actually needs to be on the cpr certificate to say it’s “coast guard approved”? The link I posted gives an example certificate with some cfr references, but none of my certificates from the apprentice steersman program have this. They have a course number though

What exactly do you need it for?

Apprentice mate of towing license, near coastal and inland. Red flag barges on the Mississippi and Houston area.

So an original issue USCG license only, no STCW?

As of Aug 28th, 2024, its listed under CG approved courses but not approved for STCW.

It meets the requirements. Unless you want to find a cheaper class, I would just take it and move on.

Why does it need to say it’s Coast Guard approved? If it’s not to meet a regulatory training requirement and is only approved to take the place of the Coast Guard exam, the only one that needs to know if it’s approved is the NMC, and they use the NMC ID number that is on the certificate. It’s of no relevance to third parties, including but not limited to port state control.

Also, just saying “Coast Guard approved” and nothing more is useless. The Coast Guard approves thousands of courses for many different reasons. Saying it’s approved but not what it’s approved for is useless, maybe worse as it invites confusion over what it’s actually approved for, e.g. a firefighting course that doesn’t meet and is not approved for STCW.

In any case, paper certificates will soon be joining the dinosaurs. The Coast Guard is developing an electronic system that will eliminate paper. The Coast Guard is currently [preparing a final rule](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/05/05/2023-06472/electronic-submission-of-mariner-course-completion-data) to facilitate the new system that will require all schools with approved courses to submit their course completion data electronically. (That same rule makes the title of some national endorsements gender-neutral).

Thank you both, the NMC id is what I was looking for. This kind of stuff confuses me

From what I’ve seen, fully online CPR classes might seem convenient, but CPR is a hands-on skill and most maritime employers or licensing bodies expect an actual skills check, not just a video and multiple-choice test. You need to physically practice compressions and AED use on a manikin for it to really count. Some providers like CPR Cart, Island CPR and other training companies offer blended courses where you complete the theory online and then attend an in-person skills session, which is usually what’s accepted. I’d definitely confirm the certificate requirements before signing up so you don’t end up having to retake the course.
