Did not realize that was on there for OSV’s. I wonder why then it wouldn’t reciprocate to the mates on MODUS? Transfer from one end to the other, should be deemed the same for that endorsement.

The basics of seamanship don’t change of course but old habits die hard.
The thing about commercial deep-sea or the military is that in each case there are layers of instruments, procedures and practices that don’t necessarily exist in say towing or fishing.
The layers are different in each case but underneath it’s about solving the same problem of taking a ship to sea. That this is the case is not immediately obvious to the people sailing the ships.

That applies to near zero OSVs though.

I went straight from OSVs to container ship Chief Mate without ever having been on a ship before in my life. Not a big deal.

Sounds like every arrival into Fourchon. Doing the gear tests, arrival checklist, and heavy traffic. Do you really think that’s a special task unique to ships, or even particularly hard?

I took my 280’ into Fourchon plenty of times. Aside from turning the thrusters on and getting the ABs prepared it was pretty informal. I never saw a checklist. Comparing that to a Gear test and arrival in Busan or Qingdao is a bit of a stretch. At the same time backing that 280 into the slip at Seaport 1 as a newbie boat handler was as tough a task as anything I’ve done on ships. Traffic in Fourchon is crazy. Not for a novice boat handler. Traffic on a ship can be tough sometimes. Both are very different both can be not fun at times.
Look the summary to this whole thing is; Going from GOM to ships is very doable. A trip or two as an AB would make the transition a lot easier and I stand by that statement. I never said it should be mandatory.

Go for it OP. Many good positive posts, a few are negative. Oil patch is not the wagon I would want to hitch to at this time… Stability is the key. Ships ain’t that hard with your assumed, pretty decent background.

So I compliment somebody and you decide to somehow turn that into an opportunity to f with me. Real nice.
Once again your demonstrating that you struggle to assimilate facts. He went straight from OSV to box Chief Mate AND had no trouble. YOU went to a maritime a academy for 4 years, did 3 cadet cruises and 3M was “way, way, way above your head”. Not discerning the difference tells me the tip on your pencil ain’t so sharp.
Let me guess you spent a lot of cadet cruise time in your cabin " doing your project."

Here’s my reference;
Case 1. waiting to night mate I’m sitting next to the new Chief mate while we wait for the ship to clear customs. I asked if he’d ever been on this class of ship before he replied no I’ve been Chief mate for 15 years If u been on one box boat you’ve been on them all. I was impressed (also cause he only had one small bag for a 120, lol).
42 days later I came on that ship as the 3rd mate that same guy was alternating between talking to himself and meditating.
1. Kings point guy 27 years experience flies out to Busan to take over as Chief mate had not been on that class of ship before. His eye was twitching, he ate in his room.
Those two were sharp and had been on box boats.
So yeah anyone that can pull that off what you did is super sharp, IMHO.

Typical Hawespiper comments. They’re all the same story: “What I did was harder” “school of hard knocks” “you had a school to teach you everything” blah blah blah.
You’re no better than anyone else. There’s shit academy mates and shit Hawespipers. Believing that 3 academy cruises and a cadet cruise fully prepares you to sail third mate on your first hitch is ignorant and further proves that you just don’t have a grasp on the system. I really am mind boggled at the idea that you think a recent grad would be prepared after that. You must not have a lot of experience?
You remind me of the last shitty Hawespiper captain I had. Gotta throw out the “you went to an academy you should know” card every chance you get, when it turns out YOU didn’t know how to do it so you gotta throw the blame somewhere else.
