I tweaked (not twerked) a plaque from my wife’s office for the above-I wasn’t sure how well received the passage would have been if it mentioned wine and chocolate! (Not that there is anything wrong with that!!)

The pont is LIVE your life and enjoy the crap out of every day, find at least one positive, and learn something new sometime in each 24 hours. Ok, my life coaching is over. Carry on.

Well, if you ever want to change industries, life coaching can be pretty lucrative. There are a lot of clueless people out there who are willing to throw money at whoever can tell them how to live.

Hey C.Captain, That is a fine looking boat you have. I am guessing it is steel. You could do some serious long range trips on that vessel. I have always liked trawlers, back in my younger days I ran a 43’ Albin. Put a lot of miles on that hull.

Some things you just can’t put a price on but I’m betting the refit costs by now have exceeded the purchase price by at least a factor of 5.

Not even a factor of two there my good man Godfrey. Bought the boat for $15k and right now am figuring I have spent between $22k and $25k (I’m not too good with bookkeeping) on the refit to date including the new genset ($6500). Of course, this does not include normal expenses of ownership such as moorage, survey, insurance, etc… The basic cost to own her is right at $500 a month ($300 moorage and $200 insurance)

$500 / month carrying costs is not bad. Our family had a 42’ sportfish here in CT and the cost was $2000/month.

Bank note - 800/mo
Slip & Winter Storage - 700/mo
Insurance - 300/mo
Broken Stuff - 200/mo

When we bought it in '03, diesel was 1.47/g
When we sold it in '07 diesel was 4.50/g.

Seeing how this sucker burned 32 gph @ 20kts, the cost of running across the Sound for the day became nutz.

If I ever graduate and have some money, I’d get an efficient full displacement trawler like ORCA. Or better yet, become master of some mega-yacht and let the owner pay for all my fun in the sun…

I would never think for a minute of owning a boat where I had both a big monthly payment and also huge fuel bills on top of that. Frankly, I was not planning to become a boat owner again but the deal with ORCA was such that I really did have to buy here even without a real plan of what I was going to use her for. If she can pay her own way, then it becomes the perfect boat to own. Just need NOAA to charter her for 50 days next year and I will be fat! Between charters, I can use her to cruise and fish with all over the NW. Still not sure if I am going to rig for commercial salmon trolling, but I do have the gear to troll for Albacore if I choose to. Just need some kind of spray brine or other chilling system wouldn’t be killer to add.

Btw, got another boat for free the other day. A 28’ Tollycraft sportfisher that needs engines but is otherwise a good hull. Plan to find a pair of 100hp diesels to replace the fuel guzzling Mercruisers that are in her now.

Here’s pics of her

HA! Don’t fool yourself…the rosy cheeked boy pictured in the photo was just the disguised outer shell hiding a dark and tortured soul. It only took 50+ years to shed that shell and emerge as that legendary curmudgeon you all gradually grown to tolerate over the course of three generations!

A free boat can cost you plenty. If you think you can fix her up an flip it - good luck. The only people who make money selling boats are the brokers.

You own a boat for your enjoyment, that’s it.

[QUOTE=powerabout;124353]as the punters never get to test a jury rigged rudder generally what they think will work will not.

Well mine involves using the two boat davits on the transom, a sheet of plywood weighted on the bottom with chain and suspended vertically in the water with inflatable fenders. Lines run to the trailing edge of the plywood through the davits port and starboard. Heaving in and paving out alternately using the trawl winch. And no I haven’t tested it, but I have everything aboard to rig it and if for some reason that didn’t work. I have the boom from which I could trail a drogue and swing the boom side to side with the guys. That would work.

Now regarding a tome to show all the possible jury rigs would be a fools errant since the whole concept of a “Jury Rig” is to improvise with materials and equipment on hand. The key is to carry such materials and equipment before departing with realization what they might be used for ahead of time. Regarding the methods of how to jury rig something at sea, many of the old seamanship works of the past would be filled with different drawings of ways to rig a rudder with a hatchcover and a spar or such. Titles like “[Standard Seamanship for the Merchant Service](https://archive.org/details/standardseamansh00ries)” by Felix Reisenberg comes to mind. They even taught you what the names of each sail on a full rigged ship are!

Obviously, these particular ya’boes knew nothing about the concept of a “jury rig” or had any seamanship sense or skills whatsoever but they did know to use a satphone to call the USCG! I doubt they knew how to use a VHF though or perish the thought that they would carry an SSB out there in the ocean. Heavens Above!

When your rudder falls off you can steer your boat using the sails and the weight of the crew as follows:

To turn the boat into the wind you can:

1. Sheet in mainsail and/or let out jib
2. Move weight forward
3. Heel boat to leeward

To turn boat away from wind you can:

1. Let out mainsail and/or sheet in jib
2. Move weight aft
3. Heel boat to windward

But the technique is not teach in the module; ‘’ How to become a Captain in 6 hours ‘’ … 😉
