Hello everyone. I’ve been trying to understand the cfrs reguarding sea service calculations (shooting for ab unlimited ticket) for the past few days, and decided to just join this forum and ask people directly.

CFR 46 12-12.05
(1) Able Seaman—Any Waters, Unlimited. Three years service on deck on vessels operating on the oceans or the Great Lakes.

my questions are:

what is an ocean? (is time in the gulf of mexico not applicable to an ab unlimited ticket?)
what is a year of seatime? 365 8-12 hour days?

Seriously? If you read the CFRs there are definitions that tell you what you need to know.

GoM is ‘oceans’ for their purposes.

Year is 360 8 hour days. NOT 365.

I am exercising near super-human restraint to avoid answering “what is an ocean?” in the style of a recurring joke in “Airplane.”

As already noted, the licensing/MMC sections of 46 CFR have a definition section…

It’s a big body of water, with ships and boats but that’s not important right now
