I remember a trip to Brownsville many moons ago to break up a Liberty/Victory ship. “Betelguese” We all went across the border in Matamoros… The other senior AB was proud he bought Tequila from Mexico to bring home. Asked the captain to hold it for him. Funny, the captain gave it back to him at the end of the trip and told him to read the label. “Made in New York”. Got a good chuckle from that. Sorry Moe, you were blind when you bought it. Captain Sammy knew, and kept that info close until crew change.
I still leave cookies and milk out. Just in case.
A bottle of beer is the usual item here. It’s probably based on this being the end of his run.
And with the summer heat it is even more well deserved.
(Besides, you can always drink it yourself in the late evening and tell the kids “a little white lie” in the morning, showing them the empty bottle as “proof”)
