Lifeboat accident (again)

They do and they do thanks to fear mongerers mentioned before . I do not recall to order the mecessary crew to man the lifeboat as I had always enough voluntary eager participants mostly seasoned seamen.

Problem however exists with the "femininised " generation of mamas pampered boys and those who spent larger part of their careers ca 1mtr above the water level and 5-10 meters above scares the bejesus out of them. Never had any problem with cadets from huge tall ships -always first to jump and go.

Hence the trick with driver seat always worked fine generating wider participation and hence better familiarity . The hard cases are eliminated by administrative tools and consultation with office in a quiet manner. Can not see any reason to be a Judge Dread allowing office blokes do some work.

And like with everything, common sense should prevail. The boat specs are available, maximum launching hights with full /partial crew mentioned and surely jumping into the drivers seat when there is 25 mtrs to the water is not my option either on cargo ship.
Therefore i will not even ask for voluntiers and wait patiently for 10 mtrs in calm less risky environment what sooner or later will happen. Personally I enjoy the ride. .

The freefall boat shown in Post #6 drops from 35 m.
Test drops are not for the fainthearted.

PS: When I did my one and only drop, one of the young participants ask if he could go another time.

Mr.Bugge

what is 20 000 gt. It is a small ship. I started as rokie master on this size in 1994.

The new regulation is a joke to be lamented and done under the pressure and propaganda of fear mongers who should not be a seamen but sell mellons or make a living taking appart their small boat little engines to pieces or do crab & shrimp fishing.

They howled, they moaned , screamed about the dangers quoting appocaliptic stats and lies.

It is a JOKE.

And believe it or not .Same hypocrites for whom 5-10 mtrs is a horrible life endangering experience pay top dollars to go with their kids to lunaparks for a rollercoaster ride and other exhillarating experiences.

As an industry average, a 20,000 GT ship generally measures:Length Overall (LOA): 150 to 180 metersBeam (Width): 23 to 28 metersDraft: 9 to 12 meters

The exact measurements depend entirely on the ship’s category:
Handysize Bulk CarrierLOA: ~175 mBeam: ~28 m Draft: ~10 m
Chemical/Product TankerLOA: ~150 to 160 mBeam: ~23 to 25 m Draft: ~9 to 11 m
General Cargo ShipLOA: ~165 mBeam: ~21 to 23 m Draft: ~9 to 11 m

The Captain of the El Faro gave the order to abandon ship within minutes of the last confirmed communication. It may have been too late to launch any kind of lifeboat.

Your best bet would have been a freefall lifeboat IMHO:

  • Moving away from the sinking/burning ship at speed when hitting water.
  • No danger that hooks doesn’t release correctly, or too early.
  • No danger of being smashed against the hull.
  • No danger of being pulled under the stern, or against the propeller.

Yes You are right Herr Bugge

wat waz the flag??

IIRC this was a yard test without anybody in the boat.
Conclusion was that for such tests sand bags must be used to simulate the weigh of people, otherwise the CofG becomes wrong.

PS: I think I posted this video here several years ago:

Your fished item seems to be out of context herr Chief_Seadog

Speculation.

For ships in condition as pictured in my # 16 everything is too late.

If I would like to discuss masters decisions made in dire straits with licenced Engineer with long family engineering /scholarly traditions ( My father was…) who is hiding his credentials and appears to be "unlisted " moderator , then I would create a new thread or piggy back one of the old open threads on the topic of El Faro.

But because i do not want to and do not want to tramp on the dead man’s grave (RIP) and leave a very narrow channel here with no granted leeway , I put deliberately date 2012 instead of the 1st OCT 2015 , the date of ignominy of 3 institutions (TOTE, ABS ,USCG ) who as it appears self- investigated themselves what is rather odd practice in investigations .

Meantime if i am allowed some leeway , I am honored ( no sarcasm intended) to be visited by three moderators (including one super) in such a short period of time . Wonder why and is it a special reward to wipe my tears for not receiving a welcoming meaasge as others do.

I am missing greatly very thought provoking , deleted post about hammers and nails by herr K.M. in the other closed thread . Very thought provoking.

Have a great day.

So is it a fault of the boat design, some latent defect , inherent vice or not adhearing to testing procedure or may be “human error” , not so new buzzword and kinda euphemism used by dogooders, who want the differently gifted ppl or differently able dudes to feel comfortable.

Glad to be wrong!
