I applied online for a captain’s job here and the next day they called with an offer. I was shocked at the day rate offered for captain’s position 380 a day seemed to be way low. I’m making 390 a day on a casino boat and I am home at night, Is it just me or does this seem low for 1600 ton oceans with DP basic? ---

Wait until you see the 40 year old boat K.G. wants you to work on for that $380.00 per day. 100 ton crew boat captains are making more than $380.00. ---

AB’s are making that. And I thought I was being low balled,WOW 380 a day for ratty boats,I would pass ---

Nice to know there are guys making less then me… The question is how bad to you want to get in the oil field? The thing is you don’t have your DP license, or any DP experience for that matter, and that is what companies are looking for right now. One thing to consider is take the job and get your DP license and in a year or so move on to bigger and better things. Until you make a pass through South Louisiana you wont know for sure if that’s the best offer you can get. The boats are old, the pay sucks, but sometimes you have to take a step back to take a leap forward. ---

I worked there about 5 years back. Needless to say, I didn’t stay long. The reason for the low pay is the types of jobs their old, outdated, vessels fetch. Bottom feeder jobs that decent operators wouldn’t even consider. Simply put: The Shell’s & BHP’s of the industry are not gonna pay a good day rate for junk like that. So the only jobs they can get for their boats is lowball offers from hole in the wall oil companies that dont wanna pay one penny more than what it takes to get the job done. ---

Yes it may not fit for you, but it can certainly fit for some. One 500 ton captain is NC and needs sea time to get his 1600 ton license. So, yes as Jemplayer has implied working for one company can help u advance to another. To each its own. ---

Thanks for the input guys. I am going to keep looking and hopefully some company out there will want someone that has 37 years of boat handling experience. who was willing to fork out the money DP basic. ---

Check out Bieir Radio in Belle Chasse for DP classes. It’s usually $2000 for the class. I have had guys stay here while taking that class and got hired right after they completed it. Best wishes.
