To select a more important invention, at random: the PC. A world without containers would just have a lot more break-bulk ships. But a world without cheap digital computing, and the entire technical world now associated with it, would be a vastly different place than today.
Once could propose the internet as an adjunct invention, or now, AI.
Other low-hanging fruit: nuclear weapons.
