Then he needs to get his head in the game and realize the true rights and wrongs of the maritime industry and realize that his cronies are frequently, not always but still frequently, on the WRONG side.

Not much chance of that. He is a cutter guy but as is usual with lifelong USCG guys, the only thing they know about the commercial side is what is spoon fed by lobbyists or finds about in reports which are normally related to accidents and mishaps.

God how I wished the USCG was like the Canadian Coast Guard…CIVILIAN! Give someone a military rank and the power rush goes right to their effing heads. Same crap at NOAA. WTF do they need to be a uniformed service for?

As a cutter guy I would think he’d be interested in commercial ships if for no other reason than they are friggin huge. I’m not trying to belittle the cg but their largest cutter is smaller than anything I’er ever worked and they are much less complex than my current vessel.

How could you call yourself a man and not want to know more about the largest moving objects ever built by man? How could you call yourself a sailor without ever dreaming about being at the helm of the world’s largest ship? How could you call yourself an Admiral without realizing that commercial ships are the lifeblood of any democracy? And how can you wear a pointy hat and call yourself a historian without understanding that the navy and cutter service were created to protect and serve merchant ship and merchant sailors, not the other way round.

I respect the USCG but I don’t respect any admiral who has countless photos of himself impersinating a SWAT team cop and military commando in fatigues and no pictures of him on the bridge of a commercial ship. Not to mention countless photos of himself with military and government dignitaries and no photos with the real mariners.

john… Has der commandant ever invited a gCaptain journalist to his state of the coast guard speech or any other official function in DC? Has he even once offered to fly you out to USCG headquarters to shake hands?

I have always advocated the USCG separate into two distinct organizations. The military one would operate the white and red hulls, planes, helicopters, rescue and harbor patrol craft and a civilian one which would take over oversight of newbuilds and overhauls for all the USCG fleet, aids to navigation including operating the black hulls, mariner licensing, ship and marine facilities inspections, VT services and communications. I am firmly convinced that wherever the military component is eliminated from an essential government function that cost savings accrue especially if a service is contracted out to the private sector to perform for the government.

Personally, all of the armed functions of the USCG could easily be melded into the Navy as well. Why should it not be legal for a Navy vessel to do coastal patrols? They do it now with a USCG contingent aboard so why do we need high endurance cutters? WE NEED ECONOMY OF OPERATIONS THESE DAYS and that’s something brass hats in any service simply cannot grasp!

I wish he had. We might all be better off. These guys make me think about the big hats in N. Korea or the middle of Africa, the less they have to offer, the bigger the idiot they are the more medals and wrist bracelets they wear. They make the pre-revolution French poofters look modest.

Here is the guy who won the Second World War in the Pacific … who do you think earned a medal?

You would think that those in the top leadership positions would be intelligent enough to see through the BS created by the sources you mention, and thus from a better picture of how thing really are based on multiple information outlets.

Well if that was the case then he deserves at least that much credit. They don’t always do the right thing, and whether they do or not they often look quite ridiculous, but at the end of the day even a broken clock is right twice…

CG will never be part of the Navy because we have law enforcement authority whereas the Navy does not. Yes we have CG LEDETS that deploy on Navy ships for the purposes of LE, but its those teams that are doing the boardings.

As far as the fatigues go, there are many uniforms that the general public do not see us wear. Blue, green, jungle, digital and desert patters are all in use for specific purposes…
