On indeed there is an add looking for an inland Chief Engineer , pay says $300 a day, that’s about as near to the absolute bottom of the barrel as I have seen, a shade tree mechanic could do one job a day and be home and top that. ---

Not entirely sure what a shade tree mechanic is but I like the sound of it. I guess it’s like a tree surgeon for shade trees? Napoleon was a big champion of shade trees, hence the boulevards. 300 scoobies a day; any extras on that? ---

Can’t find the add & looked multiple times, we call a shadetree mechanic one of them guys you can usually identify with a chainfall around a large tree limb with an engine hanging off of it, usually a few beer cans scattered around and may or may not be a good mechanic but will take the job anyway lol. ---

I pay my shade tree mechanic $35 an hour in cash. Garage rates these days are about $100 to $200 an hour ---

Screw that job. I could understand if it was a dinner cruise or a excursion boat that left the dock 2-3 hrs a day, 3-4 days a week but a pushboat, 12 hrs a day working 28 & 14 is nuts. I’ll go back to stripping before I worked chief for 300 a day. ---

It also mentions in the job description schedule that must be available on your time off if called. ---

this job just can not be for licensed officers guys. any rated eng. looking at this is doing so only for entertainment/curiosity. shade tree mech/can mechanic/ etc. ---

Since I could start an engine without burning up a starter, could read a dipstick & change oil, was mechanically inclined & had some tricks up my sleeve that I learned from a family of impoverished shade tree mechanics, I was quickly promoted to deckineer. It paid 10 bucks more & included everything the normal deckhands did but I was assigned to taking care of the engineroom 30mins at the start & ending of my watch instead of sanitary. This 300 dollar a day job is probably for a deckineer type position? ---

A “shade tree mechanic” is a man who can do car repairs in the shade of a tree. They can nail a 2X4 between two trees and use a hoist to pull an engine. Many of them are excellent mechanics, but making $300 a day, I doubt it. ---

Back in 1990-1992, while I was still on active duty in the USN, I worked part-time as a relief Captain on the “Spirit of XXX” in Norfolk, VA. They wanted you to look like Captain Stubing of the Love Boat, but they paid like Skipper of the S.S. Minnow. ---

If dragging outside they’d fall overboard & could drag you over. We had to hump them on our shoulders. Redflag barges had big open decks but usually had winches. If I was still an inland pushboat deckhand I’d take that deckineer job for 300 a day. Deckhanding sucked, too hard a job. ---
