Are you fudging the #'s? I don’t know any 1st class welder that isn’t making $25 or more and hr. What year you talking about 1980?
What are you a moron?

With over 300 people working my jobs on three continents, today, in MS it is $12 / hr…if you’re first class that is, not a jack leg … direct from Joe Bosses’ mouth to the applicant. In front of me, the customer.

Of course with the downturn, we’ll be letting a few good people go…so don’t be expect’in too much there Rastus.

$25 an hour. You’re joking right.

$25 and hour for a well certified TIG welder, or a good SAW operator at an ASME N, U or S coded specialty shop, or over doing API work or $22 / hr + benefits in the (evil) union yard in Pascagoula.
Yeah.
Okay.
Maybe.
Another Asinine statement from you. 1st taking control of you life and life’s ambitions is WITHIN the person, not some piece of paper saying you went to school. Just an example is anyone with a H.S. diploma can become a U/L Master. (This is a maritime forum so I will use that as an example.)

2nd, what is with you and FOX NEWS? I don’t watch it no more than any other media outlet. I do watch HLN, FOX NEWS and CNN. I mostly watch Morning Joe though. Why do so many Dem’s think Fox news is the devil??? I personally don’t like them for the way they treated Ron Paul but that is just me. No news outlet is going to sway my vote but I don’t hate them, just as I don’t hate CNN or MSNBC.

3rd, I also think some unions are needed… Not to take care of me as a worker though. I’m a believer in the pilots union (airplane type) and bus driver union and anything where someone is moving large amount of passengers. Not so much for auto workers, steel workers, bread makers, or stewardess unions and such. I’m even for some regulation against truck drivers driving a lot of hours. I’m not for the truck drivers union though.
Yes, it is asinine statement from me. Just because you don’t agree with it makes it asinine. Yes people can make it in this world without education. Education makes the path easier. Education gives people more options to control their outcome and not to have to suck up to Joe Boss. Your example of an Unlimited Master is a bit asinine, I guess training doesn’t count as education in your world?

It is not only Fox News but all media outlets have a product to sell. The suckers buy it by the ton. It is just Fox News that is anti-union. For example, I once saw the AMO president on Fox & friends. The story was trying to show American sailors in a positive light with regards to our training. Not once in the story did it mention that AMO was a union. They continually referred to AMO as an “Organization”. I assume it is forbidden to say "union’ in any positive light on Fox News.

Lastly unions serve a purpose in all the places you think they aren’t needed. It gives those people a right to collectively bargain for wages and working conditions. Joe Boss doesn’t like people to be able to collectively bargain. He would rather set those conditions on his terms with no input from anyone else.

If ya’ll don’t like them folks in da south then keep your ass home. Stop slumming and get you one of dem great high payin Union jobs up north. You won’t stop talkin bout how stupid everyone down der is and da poor workin conditions. So stay yer ass home and shut your flappers.

We need a much higher minimum wage that is a modest living wage, at least $15 per hour. Anything less than that, just means that we taxpayers have supply welfare programs to keep all those underpaid wage slaves alive. That is a huge subsidy to corporate America. Walmart is the biggest welfare recipient on the planet.

Trinity, in Gulfport, is presently advertising for a number of open trade positions, including welders. They’re offering $23 per hour, plus benefits.

Good.

I’ll call Wayne.

Maybe he’s decided he needs to pay more.

But I 'spect upon further enquiry, it is no such thing.

Man, I really do feel for you. I have done a lot of sacrificing and lot of studying to get where I am. I hope the best for you.

If they are only paying $12 for your trade I would try to make the man think about it. I would move on to Wal-mart. They avg. $12.94 hr for full time employees. May not be what you want but it’s $1 more an hour. I quite my job 5 years ago when a company bought the boat I was on and said we only pay $100 a day to the deck crew, take or leave it. Guess what, I packed my bags and told him I could make that working in a restaurant and be home every night. Then 2 months later the other deck hand quite. 2 months after that they bumped it to $150 for deckhands. All done without a UNION.

Maybe that way the union boss will see like Joe Boss and realize he needs to give a raise.

You are the one that mentioned, H.S. Graduation rate, Bachelor Degrees and such. You didn’t mention OJT one time in your post. You are the one who called the southern folks ignorant because they were at the bottom.

The median wage for welders in MS is $18.63 per hr. In LA is is $20.17

So I wuz waaaaay wrong. I still think Wayne ain’t paying $23 an hr, but he may be. Of course that hiring sign has been up there since 2005, just to make sure no one thinks their job is too secure.

My mistake and so I apologize half heartedly and only under duress.

Maybe we should all be lovin’ all that Freedom of $632.00 a week take home pay, of course less in LA.

Whoa Daddy !

Gonna get me a new pirouge and a 60 inch Plasma …

Well anyway…

Forget that part.

Just remember, plenty of people are hurting and just barely scraping by in the USA.

I hope people look around and realize it is their duty as A’murcans and decent people to support living wages. And that means no knee jerk agreement with propaganda from any side.

Freedom only comes when, by the fruits of your own labor, you can lift up your head every day without fear of bankruptcy or eviction or abuse.

Luck comes in a lot of ways, and people too often confuse their own good luck with hard work or some form of divine right. One day, when you are old and sick, or cradling a loved one dying in your arms, you might remember that whjat you had in life depended a whole lot on luck.

I must be the luckiest man in America. I just had to send in my luck time and the Coast Guard was like “don’t worry about taking any classes or studying or anything, it’s your lucky day.” I tried working hard to learn how to do the job, but my employer told me to just shut my eyes and steer, luck would get the boat where it needs to go. You have got to try it for yourself, jump into your car and close your eyes, stomp on the gas and see how lucky you are.
You have got to try it for yourself, jump into your car and close your eyes, stomp on the gas and see how lucky you are.
Okay, here is a real question for your living wage theory. A man is working as a welder for $20/hour. It’s hard work with long hours. When the minimum wage goes to $15/hour he won’t get a raise because he already makes more than that. But he will have to pay twice as much for lunch because he consumes a lunch every day. So now his $20 per hour becomes more like $18/hour. So basically he would be better of to quit his job find a minimum wage job and not work so damn hard.

Minimum wage jobs are not careers. I have had them and they taught me work ethic and gave me job skills. They should be stepping stones to something better. They are not meant to raise a family on, buy a home, or get a fancy new car. They are a price we pay to better ourselves. They help keep prices down and businesses profitable. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but it’s how a capitalist system works. If you don’t think the minimum wage is high enough to support your lifestyle, advance your skills and move on to a higher paying job.

“The harder you work the luckier you get”. - Thomas Jefferson

No guarantees, but if you want to hedge your bets… Just saying

I diminish the hard work and skill of no man. Think again.

Of the billions of people on Earth, think how lucky you are.
You could have been born in Syria in 1977.
You could have cancer at the age of 3, or been killed in a car crash at 16.
Hey, stuff happens. In your town.

Yeah, a lot of where you are today is luck my friend.
And you are no more deserving of that good fortune than any one of the billions on this earth, no matter how self righteous or white or Southern or Yankee one might be.
That is what sickens me about Fox News.
Playing off people against one another, as if one group is somehow, magically more deserving.
And then people start believing their own self-fulfilling bull about how much they earned what they got with no help from anyone else, ever.

Sure, I expect everyone to work and work hard.
And try with what they got. I’ve worked every day my adult life for what I have. I got fuck all from my parents except a good home, more or less, and a public school education. From high school onward, it was my problem.
Luck my friend. Luck.

But in A’murca, lotsa people got little to nothing to work with … maybe their parents were alcoholics or drug addled or just too preoccupied.

I suppose that is the fault of a 2 year old and we should cut the lazy F’ers off.

They were somehow, undeserving and never should have a chance.

The Word of God.

Amen.

So do you share your “luck” with the “luck impaired”? What have you done to spread some of your luck around to others?

By employing 74 people with benefits and giving millions to the church, non-profits and universities.

Yes there is OJT but how many classes has a Unlimited Master taken outside of the job? Or classes just to get to a Master’s license? I know I have taken quite a few. I was in south Florida this month and I go up north next week for more training. OJT is not the training I am talking about. I am talking about the type where you sit in a class. Obviously, you haven’t done much of that.

I never said southern folks were at the bottom. I did say people in the Gulf were generally less educated. Less education generally translates into less money and opportunities over a lifetime. If you are too stupid to understand then I hope you don’t tell future generations to skip getting an education.

I said they are anti-union in the south. Partly it stems from ignorance of unions and being brainwashed by your beloved Joe Boss. Apparently, you like the taste of him.

You asked what I had against Fox News and I gave you an example. I seem to have deeply offended you with that. Sorry.

I have moved on… it was fun for awhile but your ignorance bores me now…

Then I applaud you. Most liberals just bitch about everyone not giving enough, and are the stingiest of all. But I still don’t believe luck is to blame for my success in life. Everyone is lucky just to be born no matter if it is to royalty or into poverty. It’s what do that with that luck that defines who you are. This America you speak of may not be perfect but more people have been able to rise out of poverty through hard work in a single lifetime than anywhere else in the world. I can’t stand it when people say how greedy America is. Americans give more money, doctors, time, and education to other countries than anyone else. But in return we get demonized all around the world and sadly by some of our own.

I think I am going to be only a spectator more often…now, this is entertainment!

I had no idea how much fun just watching can be!
