> Matthew Flinders died the day after the book detailing his circumnavigation of Australia, A Voyage to Terra Australis, was published. More than 200 years later, his body has been found during building work.

What good news. The man is a hero to Australians and every second street is named after him (ok, I’m stretching it there) but I commend his deeds as an exemplar of fine British seamanship and exploration in the age of discovery.

As an interesting aside, I may well have avoided clipping my propellers years ago in my patrol boat in the unsurveyed Gulf of Carpentaria if his exploration there had made it onto the British Admiralty and later, Australian charts as it should have. I later had access to his original sketches and charts. My chart at the time was a white blank. I suggested the name ‘Two Prop Rock’ to the Hydrographer but it’s still there only as something like ‘Rep 1983’ instead of the more correct 1800’s date.
