Google's Falkor (Schmidt Ocean Institute)

Was overtaken today at the 16 buoy by Google’s FALKOR headed west out of the Egmont Channel off Tierra Verde, FL in the GOM. Pretty impressive rig: http://www.nature.com/news/private-research-ship-makes-waves-1.12680
The ship is indeed impressive and is a great addition to the world’s oceanographic research fleet. The FALKOR is actually not owned or operated by Google. It is operated by Schmidt Ocean Institute which was founded in 2009 by Eric and Wendy Schmidt. Schmidt Ocean Institute is collaborating and partnering with scientists from around the world; FALKOR will be conducting science with remotely operated vehicles this summer off Cayman Islands and the US and Canadian west coasts.

Too bad they decided to foreign flag it. Shame on them.

I had the same thought.
