Using lapware, its giving me a lot of gmdss questions under deck safety for Q121.
Have others actually come across gmdss questions on the uscg exam for 500/1600?

Yes, I remember a few basic ones. There’s a difference between the USCG questions and the FCC question bank. If you’re going to see any on 121 they will be the ones on Lapware not the FCC ones. If you end up taking GMDSS (worst class ever) your best bet is to use FccTestOnline™ to study. They HAVE to use that question bank. For mariners it’s just element 1 and element 7 tho I think roughly around 650 questions.
You only need a 70 on Deck General. Focus on the primary Deck General topics. It’s unlikely that you’ll see more than a couple GMDSS questions. I wouldn’t bother studying GMDSS, just guess on those questions and move on.
Sound test taking strategy.
Don’t worrry too much about those 70%’ers. Just have a good overall feel for the material.
Appreciate it. Seemed odd so many of those questions were there. But Im learning now what I can skip or read it, answer, and move on. And concentrate on the other modules more.
Yep Ive taken gmdss but maybe 2yrs ago. Passed it and brain dumped. That was one of the more challenging tests. Brain was fried after that.
They have been there for close to 20 years. The questions are not as technically specific as those in the FCC exam and the written exam in a Coast Guard approved GMDSS course. They are geared towards the Master being responsible for the management of the vessel including all equipment in the wheelhouse, even if they are not a licensed GMDSS operator and/or hold the STCW endorsement.
Yes sir I was definitely overwhelmed as well. It sucked. Not only more challenging than it should be it was extremely dull. Best of luck man you got this!
Thats understandable. As I went through the rest of the questions, they weren’t nearly as technical as taking gmdss for fcc. This is my first time using lapware and was little surprised to see them. Same thing with some celestial questions but I was able to search the forum and understand why.
Yes the FCC ones are way more technically driven and directly related to the actually GMDSS equipment and theory. The USCG ones on lapware are more geared towards Search and Rescue and lifesaving. More real life related versus how to call coast station Senegal or some bullshit ![]()
