Hello - I am looking for recommendations for disability insurance - long and short term. Working as AB M for MSC. 34 in good health. The last post I see on this topic is from 2022.
Unfortunately, I’ve found that most underwriters will either not insure mariners for disability coverage at all and the few who do charge exorbitant prices for that coverage. Your money is probably better utilized being invested in a FHSA or in a stable growth fund for rainy days.
If you have an employeed spouse, have you checked with their coverage? Even if your spouse tells you their plans don’t cover something like this, it’s still worth looking into because many don’t know what insurance is offered to them nor keep up with changes. Even people in benefit departments can be ignorant to everything offered. Aflack might offer a spousal coverage rider?
10 years ago I was in the same boat with disability insurance. I was 57, the only company that would insure me was Lloyds of London, the Lloyds. But an independent insurance broker found them. Check it out. Save my butt for a couple years.
