Does the Chief Engineer need to know if master choice of route is GC, Rumb line or combination there of?

Distance , expected weather, speed or eta next port should be enough.

Do they inform masters how they plan to change the liner or pull up piston for Inspection. ?

I need to know where , when and approximate eta of job completion as in port I need to arrange with agent immobilisation permit.

The rest is not my problem unless the declared work schedule is screwed due to whatever reasons.

Informing crew on the need to know basis is a good way to avoid too many questions.

Informing crew on the need to know basis is a good way to avoid too many questions.

The Chief Engineer is not just crew, they are a department head. There’s a hierarchy in place.

The word 'inform" implies a formal report. Informal conversions, during coffee or meals for example, can also be productive, sometimes in unexpected ways.
