Is it an coindence that the countries with populist leaders, in particular United States, Russia, Brazil and the United Kingdom, are doing worse in controlling the virus then other countries?
Trump remarked: âYou can call a germ, you can call it a flu, you can call it a virus.â
So far for the flu. He says things that seems to well up as some kind of swamp gas in his brain without contemplating anything. I have never seen a president doing that, usually they weigh their words very carefully. What the country needs IMHO is a real crisis manager that talks sense, who can lead the country out of this mess in a businesslike manner.
I am not going to participate in an academic discussion about a perfectly normal word like populism. Here is neither the place for, particularly not in this thread about the Coronavirus, nor in this forum.
Some people claim that Australia, Norway (ombugge can confirm), Austria, China and Hungary are all governed by so called âpopulistsâ but are coping quite well with the virus.
Spain, France and Belgium are allegedly governed by ânon-populistsâ and were hit quite hard.
College-age workers who spent time in the U.S. in the last two years â some of whom returned home long before the coronavirus pandemic â have been surprised to find $1,200 checks deposited into their bank accounts. And with no clear guidance on how to return it, theyâre holding onto the money or racing to spend it before the Internal Revenue Service realizes the mistake.
