CMA Rugby #1 in nation

Cal Maritime’s varsity men’s rugby team has jumped to the Number 1 spot in national rankings of Division II clubs after finishing Pacific Coast League play with a convincing 43-5 win over Santa Rosa Junior College on March 14th. The undefeated season, a first ever for the Keelhauler
squad, has earned them a spot in the Pacific Coast League Playoffs, set for Bellingham, WA April 4-5. Victory there could earn a spot in the National Championships in Florida later in the month. The top ranking comes from eRugby News, considered the authoritative voice of club rugby competition nationwide. Editor Alex Goff commented, “Cal Maritime is playing must-win games, and winning them, against ranked opponents. They get to be #1.”

Cal Maritime had been ranked 8th in the nation prior to its final regular-season victory. Congratulations to Coach Edward Roberts and his team for their unbeaten league season and best wishes in the upcoming league playoffs.

With a 40-24 victory over Loyola CMA has now advanced to the National Quarter Finals. Tomorrow they’ll play Georgetown for the rights to advance to the National Semi’s which will be held at Stanford the weekend of May 1. They still maintain their #1 ranking in the nation.
