Can Anybody ID This Badge?

Saved this from the bin. Provenance unknown. Patina indicates it has some age to it. Attached to a 24" loop of what might have been elastic. Initials on the (possible) House Flag are M A L.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Earl

Looks to be the cap device for a 1st Officer (Chief Mate) for American Mail Line, based on the house flag.

Their flag is a picture of a flag?

To add a little info. Yes, this an American Mail Line cap device. However, it is for the original AML which was actually “Admiral Oriental Line” of 1922, which created AML as it’s trade name and then in 1930 made it the company’s legal name. This hat device was used during that time, prior to World War II. Read the initials from top downward which will give you AML.
