Leaving vessel before hitch is finished due to crew coordinators misrepresenting vessel horsepower spec. Captain threatened me with “breaking ships articles”. ---

The worse is that you get logged but I believe you have the right to submit a statement in the official log if you are. You pay your way home and the travel for your relief as well out of wages owned. I do not know if the USCG investigates these occurrences anymore but they used to an could take action against your MMC. Where is the ship at present and how much time do you have remaining before the articles are ended? ---

I have to say I have never seen anyone break articles, but I have seen a few unhappy people come down with mysterious illnesses and injuries. ---

Ask to be paid off mutual consent. Cough up the bread to fly home and next time read the fine print. That mysterious illness/injury stuff can come back to haunt you at a later date. ---

I received all pay due, no penalty, no marks on MMD, just a very bad experience. Would still like to know what potential problems could arise from “breaking ships articles” and what are mariners options if situations like this happen. Cannot locate anything in CFR’s. Definitely will pay closer attention to what I am signing! This was a foreign run on vessel supposed to be over 4000 hp to get more unlimited hp seatime to raise license. Vessel was in serious mechanical trouble and I am happy to be off of it! Thanks again! ---
