I don’t know the light displacement of these (after the Navy has removed armament etc) but they should be worth a pretty penny on the world market for scrap ships. There should be many secrets left to protect on these old things. But I presume the US Navy don’t need to worry about money?? ---

In defence of ombugge the Chinese learnt a great deal about aircraft carrier construction when they purchased Australia’s aircraft carrier for scrap. There were plenty of Norwegians who sacrificed their lives in WW11 and back then if you had a battleship you didn’t give a big rat’s arse what the neighbours thought about where you parked it. ---

Those carriers had been laid up for quite some time and the bottomless fees incurred was a money pit. Navy cut their losses to zero for vessels that don’t sail anymore. Could think of a few more that could join that train. Agree, a lot was to be learned regarding constuction of carriers by other countries that had no prior experience building them ---

I thought people had been shaving with the JFK for years. I last seen her in 2009 in Philadelphia & it looked like complete crap then. I know there’s probably a group of veterans trying to save every old navy ship that ever sailed but that thing looked really bad. She should have been gone long ago. I was told it had guards on it but I suspect anyone with any burglary skills or $500 to bribe the invisible guard could get on her to take as many pictures as they wanted. I don’t think she had any secrets to hide. ---

Whatever they’re worth for scrap, will probably only be a couple hundred thousand more than the cost of abating the environmental disasters on board. Asbestos, lead, PCBs, CFCs, the whole alphabet. I was on there a few months ago when they pulled one of the last valuable engines off. There’s nothing left. ---

Probably in China too, since they have both the experience and capacity. (incl. in Brownsville) IMO’s HK Rules and EU dismantling regulation are covering the problem and several demolition yards are approved under those rules. Yes, they do pay less for ships with a lot of Asbestos etc. onboard, but still more than $1. Actually, towing cost to say Turkey may be a bigger reduction in value. (Unless there are some old tugs/OSVs heading the same way??) ---

Bug, have towed a few ships to Brownsville for scrapping from the reserve fleets . GIANT pain in the ass, and not cheap. Surprised they even paid a dollar after all the accomodating expenses. Your insight to the industry is well respected (By me anyway) but one of the few times our blessed USN actually made a decent monetary decision. ---
