Position Title Ship’s First Mate
This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Ship’s First Mate position with the Ship Operations unit in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University (OSU). This position will be located in Newport, Oregon.
The purpose of this position is to operate and maintain the Research Vessel (R/V) Oceanus, under the immediate supervision of the Ship’s Master, in a safe, efficient and effective manner. The First Mate is second in command to the Master and leads the work of the vessel’s deck department in addition to standing watch.
50% - Stands watch as officer of the watch at sea under direction of the Ship’s Master; navigates by use of electronic equipment and other means; maneuvers the vessel as necessary to conduct oceanographic work; writes logs; uses navigational charts; conducts shipboard and ship-to-shore communications; directs seamen on watch as helmsman, lookout, winch operator; carries out ship’s daily routine; in-charge forward during special sea or anchor detail.
20% - Provides lead work for the deck department in the operation and maintenance of departmental equipment and spaces: cranes, winches, wire rope and cable, ground tackle, rigging, frames, boats, decks, bulkheads, hull, blocks, lines, etc. Determines safe loads and rigging of crane and winches.
10% - Operates radios, radars, electronic navigation equipment, fathometers, ship control equipment, winches, cranes, boats, and research support equipment as necessary.
10% - As second in command, assists the Master in the overall operation and administration of the vessel. Leads the ship’s routine as duty mate in-port and in overall charge of the vessel during Master’s absence.
5% - Directs firefighting party and provides first aid when necessary, maintains ship’s medicine chest and medical provider.
5% - Ensures all equipment and cargo is secured for sea in accordance with vessel trim and stability requirements.
Working Conditions/Work Schedule:
The employee in this position will work on board the Oceanus at sea on research cruises that may last from 10 days to three weeks before returning to port. Ocean and weather conditions are highly variable. Shift and/or work assignment may be changed based on operational needs. Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation, therefore, weekend and holiday work is required. The employee in this position may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Possess a valid Merchant Mariner Credential with the following ratings:
- Master, 500 ton Oceans or better.
- Able Seafarer – Deck, Rating forming part of a navigational
watch. Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than
fast rescue boats (PSC). Advanced Firefighting, Basic Safety
Training, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
- Valid Advanced Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) Certificate.
Current Transport Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
At least one year (360 8-hour days) documented as a Mate of a motor vessel.
Current CPR and First Aid certificate.
Current Passport, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
Meet United States Coast Guard drug testing requirements prior to start date, and for the duration of employment.
Ability to fluently speak, read and write English.
The ability to lift/carry/push/pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds up to 100 feet.
Master, 1600 ton Oceans or better.
Vessel Security Officer Rating / Certificate, Current Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Certificate, Fast Rescue Boat Rating / Certificate, Medical Person in Charge Rating/Certificate.
