The MMP 2nd Mate is Andy Chase, a long-time instructor at Maine Maritime Academy. I’d recommend anything by John McPhee, even though his other works are not nautical. It’s al well-researched non-fiction that reads as engaging as good fiction.

“Hungry as the Sea” by Wilbur Smith is also entertaining.
Amazing book and writer. My favorite books by him are the ones that follow the courtney family in south africa, beginning in the privateer days. I read those so long ago I can’t remember all of them but ‘birds of prey’ sticks out as one of the best ever!
